Dogs require a diet that is diverse and rich in nutrients. Humans obsess about superfoods that provide these in spades. So why not get our dogs in on some of that action? The everyday kibble and bits doesn’t always cut it, and there is so much more you could be doing for your pup. If our dogs are family, then why not feed them like it?
There are a number of superfoods that dogs should be eating to improve their health and overall well-being, but which ones should you feed your own dog?
Luckily for us, Veterinarian Dr. Ernie Ward, who is also a member of the Petplan (now, Fetch) Veterinary Advisory Board, put together the following list of the best superfoods for our canine companions!

1. Apples (without the seeds)
Apples can actually clean a dogs teeth and freshen their breath – and they’re full of fiber.
2. Pumpkin Puree
The pumpkin puree is brimming with fiber, vitamins, minerals and carotenoids that are good for regulating digestion, supporting the immune system, creating healthy skin and preventing cancer.
3. Eggs
Eggs are well-known source of digestible protein. They have loads of amino acids, vitamins, and nutrients that help your dogs vision, as well as brain and heart function. They can also be a stomach-soother.
4. Bananas
Bananas are a wonderful source of energy for active and athletic dogs. The natural sugars can be metabolized quickly and converted into easy energy. They also have tons of electrolytes and potassium.
5. Carrots
Carrots are full of beta-carotene, which helps improve night-vision and prevent cataracts. Make sure they’re the appropriate size for your dog, though!
6. Turkey
Skinless, boneless and unseasoned turkey is an excellent source of protein for your pooch. It also has a bunch of those amino acids.
7. Sweet Potatoes
These awesome veggies are packed with fiber and natural sugars, as well as antioxidants that help prevent cancer and aging.
8. Kelp
Kelp is full of all sorts of great stuff: sodium, calcium, vitamin A, folic acid and iodine, for example. It can help improve immune system function as well as improve energy.
9. Quinoa
Not merely because of it’s recent popularity among humans, quinoa is great for your dog, too! It has lots of nutritious fiber and protein and is easily digestible.
10. Sardines
Like a lot of fish, sardines are packed with good nutrients. For your dog, they have vitamin B12, omega-3 oils, protein, and vitamin D.

Raw, local honey can help a dog during allergy season by exposing him to trace amounts of pollen that improve immunity.
12. Broccoli
Broccoli is healthy veggie that can help prevent cancer, is full of eye-protecting lutein and is a great source of potassium, fiber, and calcium. Go, broccoli!
A dog on this diet will eat better than I do! Now, if only I could teach my dog how to make a grocery list.
